In Japan, a foreign name is written in katakana. It is the version you would put on a form, a name tag, or a hotel booking — so it is the one shown first here.
Ateji kanji are not official and no Japanese person would read them as your name on sight. They are wonderful for a stamp, a tattoo design, or a gift — just not for paperwork.
